Camera Difficulties

I have used an Olympus digital camera for a few years with no problems, plug it in and it was immediately recognised and the photo files useable. While still using Kubuntu 11.10 I bought a Nikon Coolpix S6300 and again, no problem.

I recently upgraded to 12.04 and the Olympus camera is still usable but the Nikon is not although both cameras appear if I lsusb.

I have also installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my system and again, both cameras are useable. Both Kubuntu & Ubuntu are using kernel 3.2.0.24.

How do I fix this ?

In 11.10, did it appear in the Device Notifier icon in the notification area? Or did it automatically open a Dolphin window? i.e. did the camera appear as a mounted USB storage device?

Is the Nikon device listed under System Settings > Removable Devices? And which of the top 4 checkboxes in that dialogue do you have checked?

Another possible area to check is System Settings > Device Actions. Are actions listed for "Storage Volume" and "Camera"?

With 11.10, both cameras opened a Dolphin window as a mounted USB device. With 12.04, the Nikon camera is not listed under System Settings > Removable Devices, all checkboxes are checked. The Olympus camera opens as a USB device as expected no problem. I have also installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my system which is using the same kernel as Kubuntu 12.04 - no surprise there - and my Nikon camera opens as a USB device no problem.

Could this be a problem with kernel modules ?

Sorry not to get back to you earlier - have been busy - and I don't have a 12.04 installation yet so I don't know if this could relate to an issue introduced with Precise.

If you attach a regular USB mass storage device (one not previously attached to your system) does it work fine?

The fact that Ubuntu with the same kernel recognises the camera properly suggests it's not a kernel module problem or something like usb-modeswitch (no reason why usb-modeswitch itself should apply to a camera). It's probably something to do with KDE's removable device support.

Try un-checking "only automatically mount removable media ... manually mounted before".

In reply to SecretCode, a regular USB storage device works fine on plug-in, exactly as predicted. Tried un-checking the auto mount box as suggested but no luck.

I tried opening System Settings>>Digital Camera & it recognises it as a USB PTP class camera but all attempts to configure it on that screen fail, it gives the error "Unable to initialise camera" Also tried Adding a camera and it produces a list of every Nikon model except mine - great ! Trying a similar model also fails.

It is certainly recognising that a USB device has been plugged in but it cannot seem to identify it.
