Computer reboots into 2nd user account?

Several days ago I needed to restart because RAM and Swap usage was getting really high (this happens every week or so lately). It rebooted into the 2nd user account desktop instead of mine (administrator). I've never had this happen. The same thing happened again today. And there was a notification about upgrade to 12.04 available, which had not appeared on my desktop.
I'm thinking of installing Kubuntu 12.04, hoping that will help with RAM issues. At least when I run from the Live CD Kubuntu seems to use less RAM over a short time period.
I checked the user management module and nothing seems to have changed. Does anyone know what would cause this weird behavior?
