I have ordinary Ubuntu installation in addition to kubuntu, and the fonts look much nicer in the Ubuntu installation. Both in programs generally and in Firefox. I cannot understand why.
What are your sub-pixel rendering and hinting style settings? For me, "RGB" and "Slight" look the best.
The unjust distribution of goods persists, creating a situation of social sin that cries out to Heaven and limits the possibilities of a fuller life for so many of our brothers. -- Archbishop Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aires (now Pope Francis)

I changed the settings to the same you have. That did the trick. I have struggeled with this issue a long time. Thanx a lot.
I use KaWoken icon set that have almost all icons there is, and URW Gothic as font style.
With the Plasma theme "Seamless", it is what it's named - no borders at all, leaves more room for background image
Thanks Jonas, I finally got to time to try those out - very interesting, great example of different tastes - it all looked good, but not to my preferences - I like darker contrasts and thicker fonts/borders, so found the font a bit spidery and the theme difficult to follow but I could appreciate it was a classic setup.
Interesting how you have got your fonts so nicely drawn. I have tried the bitstream sans, but I think the fonts are very thin and not very well drawn on the screen.

Go to SystemSettings>Application Appearance>Fonts.
Use anti-aliancing: "enabled"
Then "configure", check "use sub-pixel rendering" "RGB" and then choose hinting style which works the best for you. Note that you have to restart applications (and system settings) to see difference in font rendering.
Here's mine (with details and screenshot). I'm very happy with it. It's a tad on the GNOME Shell/Unity side of things (with the Unity-like Icon-Only Task Manager and a fair bit of zooming out to change windows/desktops). You can make KDE be many things...
