Skype and g-chat sounds is BRUTAL

I have a vostro 3400. It has these silly buttons to control the volume.

Kmix picked them up so when I pushed them I could see a volume bar going up and down. Unfortunately, with my fresh install, there were no sound changes.

I fixed this by removing pulseaudio? Good news I thought.

Anyway, now the sound (mic) on my gmail chat and skype is REALLY bad.

Can anyone suggest a fix?

Any one? Switching over to windows to do a skype call is pretty silly.
