    [SOLVED] top-panel not on top

I have an auto-hiding panel on the top of the screen. Or I would expect it to be on the top of the screen. Normally, it should pop up when the mouse pointer reaches the top of the screen, but what really happens is that it pops up below any window at the top of the screen, when the mouse pointer is at the height (y-position) of the lower boundary of that window.

    Really annoying.

    Anyone who knows a cure?

don't know...im not all that bright, but I think that is normal behaviour so that you can have something "full screen" and also still get "at the panel".

As an example, I can move FF to the very tippy top of the screen I see no panel.

But...if I then move the cursor to the top of the screen then the panel appears.

I think that this might have been "a call" by the developers as as "convenience" to you, the user.

I assume that you know this, but for other people who may not, one can right click on the panel and there are different things that one can have the panel do per the user's preferences.

      UMMMMMMM
the panel appears BELOW......a window such as FF when FF is at the tippy top "of the screen"?

In other words to represent this....

      Plastic of monitor
      tippy top of screen
      FF window
your panel (start menu, sound, log out, yada yada)
      rest of screen?

      Is that correct?

        Re: top-panel not on top

My screen is wide, and therefore not tall (1280x800). So I have a (fixed) panel on the right, and an auto-hide panel on the top (horizontal panels are better for text, but still take valuable screen space).

The panel on the right behaves OK. The panel on the top does not.
If I have a window on top of the screen, the top panel does not pop up at the top of the screen, but under (further down than) the window.

If the window is maximised (vertically), there is no place to pop up under the window, so then the panel behaves as expected. Also, if the the window is set to "Keep Below Others", the panel will pop up where expected. If I switch to a virtual desktop with no window at the top of the screen, the panel will pop up at the wrong position, but then it will move (nicely animated!) to the correct position at the top.

I have had this configuration for a long time, starting with KDE 3.x. It has worked nicely until I installed natty.

Generally, everything else works fine, expect a few issues:
Sound: the kde mixer does not seem to work when output is to hdmi.
Hibernation: does not work (cannot resume, but boots).
Suspend: Sometimes does not work (cannot resume, but boots, not every time).

        strange....

          Re: top-panel not on top

Does the panel on the right extend from the top of the screen to the bottom? IF it does, have you tried shrinking the top side of the panel so that it makes room for the top panel, or, shrinking the right side of the top panel to make room for the side panel?

Yes! making the panel slightly narrower fixed it!
            thanks!
