Tools --> Preferences --> Show All
and from there find the video/monitor settings you can control.

Sorry for the delay in replay.

This doesn't seems to work. The options that switches off the screen saver is turned on by default.

Seems that VLC can not turn off KDE settings for power management and my laptop first dim display and then goes in standby when in battery mode ( I do not want to change behavior of the laptop in KDE power management).

I have installed SMplayer that doesn't have this problem but I can not watch streams from my DreamBox with it.

So any further help with VLC will be appreciated.

I don't have the issue with VLC. It's the only player I've found that does disengage the power management settings.

Tools --> Preferences --> Show All --> Advanced --> Inhibit the power management daemon during playback

          Check the option
