I run into a problem with my system today.
I use Kubuntu 11.04 on a GeForce GTS 450 with the appropriate driver installed - it has worked fine for the last three weeks. My hard-drive is brand-new and there's definitely still enough space for all the partitions I created (/, /home, /usr, /usr/local)
Today, the X11 server didn't feel like booting up any more. In other words, when I logged into Kubuntu with my username and password in the graphical login, something white flickered on the screen for barely a second, then I got thrown back to the login prompt.
Here's what has happened to my system prior to this problem:
All of a sudden, my Kubuntu didn't want me to shut down anymore. I clicked the various "shut down" or "log out" or "restart" buttons in Lancelot menu, but nothing made the shut down screen appear. Also, my headset had stopped working for some weird reason.
I shut down the system by force with the power button, and was able to restart it, but the same problem persisted. After a few times doing this, I wasn't even able to log in any more.
The only thing changed to my start up configuration since the system worked the last time was a startup script I wrote to start xflux.
On the login screen, I press Ctrl+Alt+F2 to access the command line mode and login there. I tried to move my .kde settings folder to a new one as suggested on some other sides but that didn't fix the problem for me.
When starting X11 with "startx", I get the errors that:
"modprobe nv" just gives me the error "Fatal: Module nv not found"
Unplugging the headset just removes that specific error from the log.
The start-up log that X11 creates and the session-error file both don't give away any information that could help me fix this. Does anybody know the origin of this defect?
UPDATE: after pressing Ctrl+Alt+F7, the graphical login screen had somehow disappeared, but rather I got some Kubuntu system messages (starting bluetooth & similar things) but they didn't progress at all. Going back to the prompt with Ctrl+Alt+F2 and starting X11 again, I got a new error attached to the old ones: Segmentation Fault in /usr/bin/X at address 0x44
