After upgrade Kubuntu doesn't start latest kernel option

    I upgraded Kubuntu from 10.10 to 11.04.
    Everything went very well.

But after the upgrade, if in the startup option I choose the latest kernel, everything freezes with a black screen...

If I choose an older kernel version, everything is ok....

    What can this be?

    +1

I'm seeing the same thing, new kernel, no login screen, old kernel, all is well. Looks like a lot of problems along these lines. Several posts already in this post-installation forum, slightly different descriptions but pretty much describing the same problem.

I hope someone comes up with a solution for us all! Doesn't seem to be graphics driver related but maybe?

    Thanks!

I am just not using the latest kernel now, and everything works fine...
Don't think I need that kernel upgrade.

Neither do I. But it's just annoying that it doesn't work with the latest kernel ... and it should! I'm going to keep poking around until I figure it out and will report back if/when I fix my system.

        Thanks!

If you boot back to your old kernel, do you have network access? I've noticed on two of my computers now, when I have trouble booting the new kernel, I'll be able to get into the system using the old kernel, but have no wired access at all.

Yup, no problems here. Everything works as before with the old kernel. Still no joy with the new kernel (can't get the KDE login splash screen).

Same here. New kernel = black screen, no messages, no nothing. Old kernel boots fine. Updated four machines, all four crashed somewhere along the upgrade.

Edit: So, I figured I'd go oldschool and reinstall the kernel. Using the software manager I uninstalled and then reinstalled the 2.6.38 kernel. Then I made sure /etc/initramfs-tools/modules, /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/ and /etc/default/grub were back to default. I modified /etc/default/grub to my preferred boot mode (EFI, no splash screen), ran update-grub2 and then "update-initramfs -u".

In theory the last two commands should be enough, would be my guess. I just felt like being anal and checking everything.

You didn't say but did this solve the problem?
