[SOLVED] Broken wired network after update

After yesterday's update the green light at network card stopped lighting and wicd shows no possible wired connections.

A desktop computer, onboard network card, motherboard MB Intel DG31PR iG31 Gb Lan Pearl Creek, mATX, BULK, one year old.

Karmic CD on the same computer works, so there is not a hardware network card problem.
Older Lucid kernel (24) on the same computer doesn't work either.
A netbook Acer Aspire D150 with the same network cable works, it works also with the yesterday's update.

Updated: The solution was to entirely switch off the computer from the electricity, not only with the switch on the computer. The thing appears from time to time again.

It sounds like the driver isn't being loaded. If you know what the kernel module for it is, try a modprobe. If you don't know, you should be able to discover it in the Live CD session where it works, with
    Code:
    sudo lsmod

Thank you dibl. I tried to follow your advice, I executed lsmod from Live CD session and then I started broken Lucid to find differences in modules as none seemed familiar to me. To my surprise this time (and the second boot too) network works again.

I am always prepared to execute boot after changes twice, because I know that Kubuntu sometimes needs time to understand what it is supposed to do, but this time it needed about ten times. It is too much for me.

I thought that daily update is harmless. Today I lost my faith.

10.04 should be more stable than this -- you are right to be surprised. I see at least one report of a 10.04 network problem on Ubuntu forum as well, so you may not be entirely alone.

On the other hand, when you have a working system, and you choose to update, the risk of a new problem is always greater than 0.0%. That's just the nature of software.

A perfect example of why I always keep at least two working distros installed on my computer at all times with each mounting the file system of the other. Can't tell you how many times this has saved me. So easy to boot to the working distro when one fails to be able to make modifications to the non-working distro system to get it back again.

Detonate@ it sounds pretty sad to me. I hope I will never end up with two Linux systems.

Well, if you tinker around with your system as much as I do, you will quickly realize the value of my setup.
