I was mistaken, GreyGeek. Must have been mixing my cards. I have not reinstalled on "bare metal" from OEM. 
What I must have done was to reinstall over an existing windows+Ubuntu - i.e. a double boot.
At any rate I cannot get Windows in now, by hook or by crook, and I am giving it up.
