2 questions from a new Kubuntu user

Can I update KDE to 4.5.0 in Kubuntu update center (where I also get all the other updates) or do I need to do something else to update it? Also i would like to know if I still need to download other packs to playback dvd's.

You may want to get more familiar with Kubuntu before going to KDE 4.5. (see posts under Desktop Support)

For DVD playback install Kubuntu-restricted-extras and add Medibuntu repository .

KDE 4.5 is even more user-friendly than 4.4, so no need to get familiar with Kubuntu first @GilGib.
