NumLock turns off on its own

I checked my Kubuntu settings and I know it's supposed to be turned on after I log onto my OS, but I've noticed that sometimes while I'm using Konsole or Firefox or some other GTK apps and sometimes also Kate (I know it's a KDE based app) it turns off. At first I thought it was the turn on my NumLock light command that did it but not anymore because when it's off I can still used the NumPad unless I press the NumLock button once. If I press that button once again I can type numbers as usual but the light indicator is on. Normally this stays on for the rest of the day but there are some weird occasions where it still gets off after an hour or two.

Am I just going crazy? Or what's actually happening here on my PC? I didn't let anything flood my keyboard so I don't have a clue on what's going on here.

I would try a different keyboard temporarily and observe the results carefully. Sometimes a stressed cable can cause really weird behavior.

Software can turn the numlock light on and off. I don't know enough to say whether or not it is possible for software to enable the light without enabling the keypad.
