weird desktop pains

Hi.

I am using kubuntu 10.04 and i am having discomfort using it because 1) frequently some process(mostly kate,firefox or nepomuk)will go into disk sleep
2)suddenly sometimes i wont be able to lock the screen or use any keyboard shortcuts
3) On trying to unlock the screen all i get is a grey patch on the screen (which does work though)

Any solutions ?

Well, this looks kinda strange.. I would recommend to reinstall kubuntu and see if the problem stays. If it is, then it might me something with your hardware.
Are you running your kubuntu in a virtual machine or you did a hard install of it in your system?

I think kaytrance's solution is much too drastic at this point.
