    Can't get an internet connection

I just installed Lucid on my laptop and couldnt get a wireless connection going so I hooked up directly with an ethernet cable. I was then given the option to connect with wireless and did so. This was great but after restarting the laptop it did the same thing. Tonight I came across it again and now even when I hook up the ethernet cable there is no connection. Any help would be appreciated. I am new to kubuntu and realize this is not windows so I am trying to go about it with out thinking, "in windows, I would do this."

    Laptop is a compaq F700

A common problem, but usually solved

Not being able even to get on with an ethernet connection is unusual. I'd explore the System Settings.

For wireless, determining your chipset (Hardware Information, maybe?) is the first step, since the solution often depends on it. You might then find something in the Ubuntu wiki.

I just solved my own no-wireless problem -- see http://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wif...Driver/Atheros. But I'm no authority on this subject -- what I know is pretty much limited to my own experience.

Re: Can't get an internet connection

You need to provide us with more information about your laptop than just the make/model. What ethernet controller does it have? If you don't know, open a console and type:
      Code:
      lspci | grep Ethernet
Copy and paste the output in your reply.

Also, where you connecting the wireless AP - at home or some other place? If at home, what wireless router do you have? How is it configured? Is the SSID 'hidden' or broadcast?
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

0:0a.0 Ethernet controller: nVidia Corporation MCP67 Ethernet (rev a2)
03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR5001 Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01)

It is at home, Lynksis WRT54G2 V1, setup with WPA/WPA2 PERSONAL encryption and the SSID is braodcast.

The ethernet connection did start working last night after about 5 minutes for some reason. The wireless problem still exist.
