A strange thing happened after the last update.

I have 2 machines sitting side by side running 10.04 Kubuntu. One is brand new, the other less than 2 months old. Both have NVIDIA cards. Since I run them together, they get their updates at the same time. I shut both machines down for the night on night less than a week ago and had a surprise the next morning.

Machine #1 is a dual core AMD homebuilt with a 4 year old middle of the road NVidia card. I run 4 desktops on this one and two were trashed. It is as if the backgrounds are now black on black and I can't even get into the desktop settings for those desktop settings. I haven't found a way to repair those two desktops yet.

Machine #2, and 8 core AMD came up and tells me that the NVidia driver cant be found and brings me into init 3 mode. Text based no GUI but with the network fully working. I recovered all data so no big deal. I'm religious about backups. This has a very high end card and I find this annoying. I also find it interesting that it happened to both machines on the same morning. startx got me nowhere and modprobe seemed to think the driver was gone so I'm back to finding out how to get X11 working again.

I reinstalled the NVidia driver on Machine #2 via the command line, which you have to do anyway. Did anyone else experience this?

    Hi...

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 and just received a notice from Update Manager a couple days ago (roughly) wanting me to install new Linux headers and images (2.6.32.39.) Could that be it? I'm very careful in deciding what updates to install because of issues either identical or similar to the one you've described. As far as the update I just mentioned, ain't touchin' that one! ;-)

Also, what specifically are the Nvidia cards in question?

The new card is a NVidia 550ti with a gig of RAM. This sucker even has a fan and it's own power connection. The older machine (this one) has whatever the going card was 4 years ago.

What I did to bring the dead desktops back was to go from 4 to 1 and then back to 4. It is just an irritant.

This had to be a software thing. It had to be part of the update thing. I've put the nouvue driver in the blacklist file, not sure it will help, but it won't look to update to it any more (if that is what it tried to do).
