LAN problem

Hi,
I´m brand new to Linux, but looking very much forward to learning.
I´ve installed version 6.10, and the system is running perfectly except from one problem : LAN.
It seems as if my NIC isn´t detected at all upon boot-up.
Can anybody point me in the right direction ?
-All help is much appreciated!

My rig :
ASUS P4SGX-MX (Chipset SIS650) // integrated LAN
P4 2.4 Northwood, running @2.8GHz
512MB PC3200

connecting to the internet via LAN to a cable modem.

First thing. What is the onboard nic chipset?
what is displayed if you type ifconfig?

(Unfortunately, work commitments has held me away from my PC for the past days....)
