    OpenGL problem - solved!

I am a recent convert (noob) to the fold of Linux.(some of my friends are tired of my "witnessing" already)
I installed Kubuntu 6.06 on the following system:

    BIOSTAR NF325-A7 Socket 754 NVIDIA nForce3 250 ATX Motherboard

    AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice 2.0GHz 512KB L2 Cache Socket 754 Processor

Thermaltake Venus 7+ 70mm 2 Ball CPU Cooler

    Patriot 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel

    ASUS E-IDE/ATAPI CD/DVD Burner Model # DRW1608P3SSLV

    (2)-Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 ST3808110AS 80GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drives

Sapphire Radeon 9600 Atlantis 256MB DDR AGP VGA/TVO/DVI-I Graphics Card

    Thermaltake TR2 W0070RUC ATX 430W PSU

    (2)-ZALMAN ZM-F1 80mm Case Fans

Antec SLK1650B Solution series Black Steel ATX Mini Tower Case

and was very happy Until I updated.
Using Adept, I fetched updates and applied changes
Previous to my upgrade I had an OpenGL screensaver running (Fireworks 3d GL).
After my updating I cannot use this or any other OpenGL screensaver.
(if I can get the screenshot to load)
    This is what my menu looks like when I try to configure;

    -(See attachment) Hope that worked.
--It did not the upload folder is full--

Visualize the preview window as transparent and you can see underlying window.
Test button press "click" black screen

So the question is what happened to OpenGL?

Any and all suggestions will be welcomed,

    Pyrotech

To narrow down the source of trouble:

    Code:
    sudo dpkg --status xscreensaver-gl

Use dpkg --info (= dpkg-deb --info) to examine archive files,
and dpkg --contents (= dpkg-deb --contents) to list their contents

I will try to look into the options presented - but don't count me out I may still goof something up.

        Then how about (re-)installing it?

Thanks for the help so far.
I used Synaptic (on the grounds that many replies to questions about trouble installing packages seem to point to adept being weak) and installed xscreensavergl.
Synaptic says OK, but still same problem.

I realize it's not the end of the world that my OpenGL screensavers don't work.
Should I be concerned that there may be a larger problem with OpenGL?

I have, since my last edit, opened KInfoCenter and found that OpenGL is definitely broken.

Does this mean that I need to install new drivers for the video card?
I have just let Kubuntu run the video as it saw fit.
I also did not update the nVidia nForce drivers as I did not think there was a problem.
Should these also be updated? If so how is the most painless?
          :P

            Re: OpenGL problem

Well I found the answer. (quite by accident)
I was visiting http://psychocats.net/ubuntu/ and followed the where's the terminal link out of curiosity.
Near the bottom of the page was a list of useful commands and a brief explanation of each.
            I entered;
            Code:
            sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
as it sounded like a good idea.
Viola! it was a good idea.

Thanks to penguin.ch for the help that made me resolve to solve this.

            P.S.
A friend of mine who has alot more Linux experience than I had only 1 suggestion,
"Re-install you haven't got that much time in it"
He was right but if I had done that I would have learned a lot less.
