Why can't I share files via Samba?

In Kubuntu 6.10 Edgy, I decided I wanted to share files via Samba. So, I opened System Settings, went to Sharing, was in the File Sharing section, and clicked Administrator Mode. There was a red box on the screen, and that's all that happened. What's wrong? Screenshot:

Haha, MediaFire isn't the greatest about that. I tried what you said, but I couldn't enable it. It told me to enable administrator mode, but I didn't know how. Here's a screenshot:

Looks like you may not be a part of the root group. Have you confirmed that you are?

KMenu --> System Settings --> User Management --> Groups --> Show System Groups --> root

Look for your user id. If not there, add it.

Hey, I had this same problem and quickly learned that samba isn't installed. You'll have to open a console and type "sudo apt-get install samba." After it's finished downloading and installing the components, it should work for you.

I'm having another problem with samba though. I can't seem to share with my windows machines only other linux systems. I know it's probably something I'm missing in the config file if anyone could give me some pointers.

BTW: I've just installed SWAT to help out with configuring samba, and after working to get that running it really doesn't give me very much control over the configuration process like it should. The only buttons it gives me are Home, Status, View, and Password.

Re: Why can't I share files via Samba?

I am a total noob, but are we sure this isn't a peculiarity with KDE?
I change system settings and get this problem quite a bit too -- the red "you have root" box and nothing else.
I then have to re-enter the system settings all over again through the K menu and when I get to where I was before, I (still, of course) have root and can do what I need to. Doesn't seem to have anything to do with what is or isn't installed. Seems like a failure to return to the previous screen.

If this IS in fact related to something not installed, then can anyone clue me in as to why I also get the red root box and have to re-navigate to system settings? (And then things work normally once I'm there?)

If you get the red 'root box' but it has not asked for your password, it is not really at root. It seems to happen a good bit (not just for this but anything trying to run as root). The only solution I have found is to drop out and try again. Once it asks for the password, all seems to work right.
