i am trying to uncompress .rar files but i cant seem to install rar and unrar

i get:

Package rar is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package rar has no installation candidate

any help is appreciated

Provided you have enabled the references to (K)Ubuntu's "multiverse" repositories, sudo apt-get install rar unrar is supposed to solve your problem.

Add. 1: Please be aware of the fact that this software is not (!) free but shareware.

Add. 2: In case of doubt about how to update the list of repositories available to your system (/etc/apt/sources.list), please make use of the forum's search function, for this topic has already been discussed manifold.
