    Need Help with Wine

I have recently installed Wine, after many tries, now I am ready to use it. I have no idea on how to run applications through wine. Could someone please give me the "Wine for Dummies" tutorial? Just kidding with the title; all I need is simple instructions as how to set it up, and run an app through it. Thanks.

To just run an application, take a look at this entry in the Wine FAQ. Also, see the User Guide

You can also try codeweavers crossover. It's just wine, with a friendly front-end. It's a commercial app, but they are the main wine funders.

Thanks for all of the help. I am still working on wine, by consulting the documentation. Also, I am trying out Crossweavers and it is a nice program.

With Wine I found the website "Frank's Corner" helpful at http://frankscorner.org/

            Hello,

            I've got problems with wine.
It was working just fine, and now I get the following error when I run wine:

extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0"

I have version 0.9.32-12.1 of wine.

            Any help will be appreciated.
            Kaya

I don't really know and I'm probably wrong.

But this seems to me like you are trying to run a 3D accelerated windows program without having 3D acceleration active in linux.

              Javier.

                Hello,

                Thanks for your reply.
No, I'm not trying to use 3D acceleration. I'm just trying to run my own interface (for hysics calculations) made by C++Builder (windows). I also have the same made by KylixC++ (linux) but in this case some components are missing. This is why I use the windows exe.

Wine used to work nicely with my exe but now it doesn't. I thought that the last version (automatically updated by YaST) of wine is troublesome.

                cheers

There is no "XFree86" in Kubuntu.

                  You're not even running Kubuntu.

There you may go: openSuse ... :P

Well, it's kinda still there . At least in the extension names.

                    Code:
                    $ cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep Free

Weird ... and what about "yast" extensions in Adept (?) ...

Not so Weird, xorg is just a XFree fork.

They probably didn't rename everything yet.

The "yast" extension is much more interesting .

For what it's worth, here are two Wine-relevant data points from my recent experience:

                          1. There is a very helpful Wine users e-mail list -- it's the usual "SUBSCRIBE" thing to join it. There are some Wine enthusiasts there who worked really hard to help me with my Wine challenge.

                          2. I found an app that can't be made to run correctly even by their best gurus - it's a MS Visual Foxpro database application for genealogy. We got close, but some of the commands and interfaces between the data entry and reporting modules just couldn't be made to function quite right. So, don't expect 100% solutions to everything you have from Win-World.

                          Good luck!
