Ctrl-Alt-F1 how do I get out?

Reading one of the other answers, I saw an advice to use Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get a console to run an sh based install. I tried it, got a text screen asking me to log in. So I logged in and got a command line. Whereupon I realized that I couldn't remember the command line. And then I dicovered that I couldn't get out. Exit just took me back to login.

How do I get back to the desktop?

    From the Kubuntu Documentation

    Switch to Console mode

The usual method of command-line access in Kubuntu is to start a terminal (see the section called “Starting the Terminal” above) , however sometimes it is useful to switch to the real console:

    1.

Use the Ctrl-Alt-F1 shortcut keys to switch to the first console.
    2.

To switch back to Desktop mode, use the Ctrl-Alt-F7 shortcut keys.

    Note

There are six consoles available. Each one is accessible with the shortcut keys Ctrl-Alt-F1 to Ctrl-Alt-F6.

      CTRL-Alt-F1,2,3,4,5,6 command line
      CTRL-Alt-F6,7,8,9.... X11 sessions

I have found using these keys much faster when swapping users than in windows. When someone else needs to login I select Switch User and let them login. I can get back to my login by using CTRL-Alt-F7. Then when I am done...Lock Screen CTRL-Alt-F9 and it's back to their login.

Additionally when I am stuck without the X-server...(it happens...when you tinker) I can have a README open on CTRL-Alt-F1 and an open command line on CTRL-Alt-F2.

Thanks to you both. So that I know how to get out and I have an inkling as to why I might want to use this.

Not necessarily related but may help....

          sudo apt-get install elinks

Text based browser...just in case your x-server crashes... you at least won't feel completey abondoned.

PS someone might have some other recommendations for text browsing as well.

Ooooo-K! I think you have given me a very valuable tool. I simply have no idea what to do with it.I think I am crippled by my Windows background where file browsers are one thing and web browsers are another. I note that konqueror seems to cover both fields but I don't normally use it because of this dichotomy. So I use Firefox and Krusader since they fit my norm.

When what went wrong would i fall back on elink? and what would I do to save myself?

elinks is a text based web browser that will allow you to get to google and search for help....if you have a broken x-server (say from doing something stupid. I don't want to be a bad example).

Here is an example of what it looks like in konsole. Just as useful from CTRL-Alt-F1.
