Install over the top of files?

In Windows you could install the os over the top of the current installation - in other words NOT reformatting and losing all the files, programs etc. Sort of refreshing the os?

Can you do this with Kububtu it always wants to reformat.

More to the point - if I want to go from Dapper to Edgy is it BETTER to reformat and install Edgy clean (it was always the preferred way in Windows) or is it exactly the same just to update?
    Thanks.

    Hi,

I don't know any way to install without formating the / partition. Anyway if you want to upgrade from one version to another, you don't need to reinstall, it's ok to just dist-upgrade. I did it from hoary to breezy then to dapper and edgy and the system was still fine.

    Cheers
