widespread problems after system upgrade with adept.

After doing a general upgrade of the system I've started to have problems with thunderbird, firefox and various other applications. For example when I open firefox it crashes or freezes before completely opening a website.
    By the way I'm running <Linux ubuntu 2.6.12-9-386 #1 Mon Oct 10 13:14:36 BST 2005 i686 GNU/Linux> <on a dell inspiron 4150>
Today I decided that I would back up my home directory onto a cd-wr and then download and install fresh kubuntu 6.06 dapper.
When attempting to burn my backup onto a cd-wr I got a lot of error messages from k3b and from cdrecord when using command line.
I need help to determine what is wrong with the computer, and any suggestions on how to fix it.
Below is the output to dmesg:

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
    Thxs
