I also have a system with an AMD64 CPU. This is what I did to install wine:

    1. Download your desired version of wine
    http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/system/emulators/wine/
    2. Extract the file
    tar xvjf
    3. cd wine* (whatever your new wine directory is named)
    4. ./tools/wineinstall
    5. This will bring you through the installation setup. When it is finished type:
    winecfg
    6. This will open the wine module

hmm, it seems to be working...however, running zsnes for windows gives me an error stating that it can't work in 24bit... any ideas?

You should try ZSnes for Linux.
Get Zsnes source code from their website and compile the code using 32bit mode on your 64bit OS. Check the news on Zsnes.com for more info.
I know its a little out of the topic, but I couldnt help it :P
