for some strange reason I am unable to upgrade to kubuntu 6.10, it seems even though I am doing the exact same process that worked with my machines back in England.

I am thinking that without upgrading from kubuntu 6.06 can I still get to my goals of hearing mp3s, seeing youtube streams and using firefox

i do all the above using 6.06
including ripping mp3's with ripperX ...

you can install FF via adept or synaptic
then install the mozilla-mplayer plugin

for mp3's you will have to install the mp3 codecs for your player
it may also be worth while installing the w32codecs

for my codecs/libs etc i use ...
