Your recommendation for best Linux Reference book

    Hi folks,
Xmas has arrived with Santa bringing me a gift certificate to Chapters bookstores. I want to get a good general reference for new linux users such as myself. Something not too complicated yet something I'm not going to breeze thru and outgrow in a week or so. I've come across a couple of books via the internet research:

The Linux Cookbook by Michael Stutz
    Linux Cookbook by Carla Schroder

If anybody out there has a recommendation or another book they've found excellent I'd like to hear about them. All opinions / recommendations will be gratefully accepted!!

    Hi wild_willy,

I rather assume this thread is dead and you have either used your voucher by now or it has expired? In the rather unlikely case that neither of those happened, I have two recommendations for you:

    - The "Ubuntu Linux Bible" by William von Hagen - rather expensive, but it really covers pretty much everything from the very first steps - choosing a distro and installing it - to administrator tools and other cool way-out-there stuff.
    - "Linux Phrasebook - essential Code and Commands" by Scott Grannemann. This one's more focused on working in the shell - actually, it doesn't mention anything on the GUI - but it complements your own first experiences very nicely if you can try stuff with and without GUI at the same time.

    Regards,

      runtime_error,

      Many thanks for your response.

I was in the bookstore the other day and was flipping through the "Ubuntu Linux Bible." It seemed to cover many of the subjects I was looking for. Unfortunately, I have already used my gift certificate (bought The Linux Cookbook by Michael Stutz).

But you know, Father's day is coming up and so is my birthday, so one never knows. . . .

The Keir Thomas book is good -- I should read it more. :P

        Can't recall the exact title.
