unable to access virtual terminals

Using Ctrl-alt-f1 ( f[1-6] ) I am unable to access the virtual login terminals from KDE. When I use Gnome, it is not a problem. I can even do it from the GDE login screen. all the screen does is flicker, and return to it's desktop view, (Frozen until alt-f7 returns me to the screen.) It does work on the laptop, also running U-Edgy with KDE.
