Help with finding what a device number really is.

Where do you find what a input device is by number when there is a probem? I have noticed that a lot of times someone inquires about a problem installing or using program that reports back something like:

X Error: BadDevice, invalid or uninitialized input device 166
      Major opcode:  144
      Minor opcode:  3
      Resource id:  0x0
    Failed to open devic

    OR

X Error: BadDevice, invalid or uninitialized input device "some number "
      Major opcode:  144
      Minor opcode:  3
      Resource id:  0x0
Failed to open "some name "

Is it at some website or is it somewhere in the Help files I can't locate?

There are a few posts about that error and Automatix. Their recommended solution is to remove or comment out the portions of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf that pertain to the three Wacom input devices. I just deleted mine. Remember to delete the three devices and also the references to those devices in the ServerLayout section. It won't hurt anything (unless you have a tablet PC or the Wacom devices) so I would give that a shot first.
