    Installing anything - especially sound

    Hi all...,

...and what a nice forum - I'm gonna need it by the look of it!

I am a newbie to Linux
At last, I have managed to install kubuntu from the iso and managed to get online!  So, some success.  However, the sound is dead.  The KMix icon was present in the bottom right corner of the screen but with an X across it.

I right clicked it or opened it in some way (can't recall I'm afraid) and there appeared to be nothing to make it work (in the dropdown chooser) so I went to the Adept installer where it seemed to show it was present.  I tried removing and reinstalling using the Adept application but now it seems to have been removed and I can't reinstall - the green tick won't stay in the box....  Hmm!  The Adept manager shows that it is "not installed".

When I right click and "request install" it seems to ignore me pretty much.  I have downloaded a file KMix-1.0 from a website and saved it in my area but I can't seem to get it to go or to point the installer at it!

For other installs I've tried (firefox, firestarter firewall and flash player so far), I have absolutely no idea what to do with the downloads either other than also to extract them to separate folders within my own folder area.  Clicking on them doesn't seem to work and the only helpful instructions I have managed to source on the web so far say things like "all you have to do is run the make file"....

Run?  How?  I've tried pasting directory and file names into the "run" command box but it doesn't seem to know what I'm talking about.....

I'm sure it's easy  ...... but only when you know how!

So, I have 2 questions really:
    1.   How do I get the sound to work from my present situation of having no KMix installed apparently?
    2.   How do I install anything else (I assume I need an antivirus and a firewall as a minimum)?

Treat me gently folks.  I don't do DOS and am basic at XP.  All help gratefully received.

Many thanks and Merry Christmas to you.

Many thanks,<br /><br />Tony, Cherie and the kids (no, not really....!)

Removing kmix and installing it without adept.
Try in the konsole (read psychocat, terminal=konsole) :
    Code:
    sudo apt-get remove kmix
    sudo apt-get install kmix
If this doesn't work - you get info why not. So not this problem:
the green tick won't stay in the box.... Hmm!

    I have downloaded a file KMix-1.0
Hmm - my kmix tells that it is 2.6 (dapper, from repositories)

      Phew!

That's me told....!  See what I mean by "easy if you know how".  To that I'd now add " if you also understand what on earth the geeks are talking about!"

Thanks very much for your help.  I'll plough my way through all that stuff over the next few days with a suitable dictionary, and a packed lunch for sustinence, and try to figure out what it all means.  I've looked at some of those links before and note that they are largely written by geeks in Geek for more geeks so I'm not too confident of success.  I'm a trier though and, If I survive, I'll report back.

Many thanks again; despite my unsure reaction, I really do appreciate your time and help and will try to do your advice proud.

Anyone got any other (eazy peazy, human sized, "write this, press that then do this" type) leads meanwhile?

Re: Installing anything - especially sound

When using adept, you can see what packages will be removed/installed when making your selections by using the "Preview Changes" button before you click on 'Apply Changes'
This shows us that by uninstalling kmix also removes a package called 'kubuntu-desktop' which is a meta-package that basically just defines a preset group of applications and libraries that make Kubuntu, well Kubuntu
It is not terrible to remove this package, but it make sit much easier for the package managers to keep it updated for any major changes or upgrades down the road.

        An example of this:
Say, I uninstall Kmix, and also uninstall Open Office because I like Koffice more, and maybe a few other standard but non essential bits as well. After doing this, I decide i want to get it all back. Simply installing the 'kubuntu-desktop' will cause all the missing standard bits to be reinstalled without having to track down all the separate packages

Anyway, after getting back on track here
follow the directions above to reinstall kmix with a slight modification

        Open Konsole and enter:
        Code:
        sudo apt-get remove kmix
        sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
The command line is good for this as it will give excellent error messages

This should get you back with Kmix
Now, open kmix again, right-click on the icon, and see if there is an 'x' next to 'Mute'. My guess is that there is. Uncheck that and see if there is sound then.

Installing programs is as easy as using the Add/Remove Programs, but using Adept package manager will show more stuff.

In reference to the "green box", I am confused are you also trying out Synaptic package manager?

Now as to antivirus, you really don't need it linux, there are few if any linux viruses out there, and the linux antivirus software is for detecting Windows viruses more or less. Firewalls are a bit complicated in linux, but there are some gui tools out there, but I don't know of any off the top of my head. Kubuntu is rather well locked down by default. i am behind a dsl router with NAT built in, so I don't really need to try and set this up myself, though someone else may have some good tips for this.

          Aha!

Some success....    I typed the remove kmix line into Konsole and it confirmed that kmix is not installed (remember I removed it) so there is nothing to remove.

I then typed the install kubuntu desktop command and got this:
          "Reading package lists... Done
          Building dependency tree... Done
Package kubuntu desktop is not available, but is referred to by another package.  This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source.
E:  Package kubuntu-desktop has no installation candidate"

So,  I'm encouraged to keep trying, this sounds like it needs to find the package.  I have the cd in the drive but the machine doesn't seem to be looking for the files there (I assume they are on it somewhere...?)

Have you any tips on how to point the Konsole script at the cd or wherever the package is?

Very many thanks for your help.

It's very strange that kubuntu-desktop is not available. Have you activated all of your repositories by removing # at the begining of each deb line?

If you have not, proceed, with care, to do it and use the command
            kdesu kate /etc/apt/sources.list
            in konsole

i think he may have typed in kubuntu desktop without the proper hyphen "kubuntu-desktop" that may be the reason it wasnt recognized by apt-get?

I suggest posting the contents of /etc/apt/sources.list, There are probably more lines commented out (this happens sometimes during the install if it can't connect to the repositories).

All line that start with "deb" should be enabled (uncommented, the '#' removed from them if doin it by hand)

                  Next instalment....

Well, I checked that I'd included the hyphen first time around.  I had and still got the same error message.

Then I typed in the "kdesu kate /etc/apt/sources.list" phrase and I got back the following....>

"X Error: BadDevice, invalid or uninitialized input device 166
                     Major opcode:   144
                     Minor opcode:   3
                     Resource id:      0x0
                  Failed to open device"

This message came up twice.  Then I got....>

"sh: kate/etc/apt/sources.list: no such file or directory"

I then did a CD to the directory called "/etc"

Further CDing revealed no sub directories in there.  Just a long list of around 150 files at a guess, (one called "apt" actually!) which won't cut and paste out of the Konsole window.  I tried CDing to apt from within "/etc" but just got "no such file or directory".  Are we looking for anything specific (I can confirm any files if you tell me their names) or I'm guessing its the lack of the desu kate /etc/apt/sources.list directory which is the issue?

No # signs to be seen yet either, BTW!

                  That's it!

If it seems easy still, I'd be grateful for continuing support to migrate from Bill's Windows but I do  understand if it is looking a bit gloomy....

Many thanks again, and have a great Christmas!

Re: Installing anything - especially sound

you need to have the command
                    Code:
                    kdesu kate /etc/apt/sources.list
note the space between kate and the file path

Just simply use Konqueror to browse to the directory /etc/apt, make sure you have enabled viewing hidden files/folders in Konq'a View menu. Then right-click on the file there called 'sources.list' and go to the Action menu, then Edit As Root then you can copy the text and paste it here
