Hi all...,
...and what a nice forum - I'm gonna need it by the look of it!
I am a newbie to Linux
At last, I have managed to install kubuntu from the iso and managed to get online! So, some success. However, the sound is dead. The KMix icon was present in the bottom right corner of the screen but with an X across it.
I right clicked it or opened it in some way (can't recall I'm afraid) and there appeared to be nothing to make it work (in the dropdown chooser) so I went to the Adept installer where it seemed to show it was present. I tried removing and reinstalling using the Adept application but now it seems to have been removed and I can't reinstall - the green tick won't stay in the box.... Hmm! The Adept manager shows that it is "not installed".
When I right click and "request install" it seems to ignore me pretty much. I have downloaded a file KMix-1.0 from a website and saved it in my area but I can't seem to get it to go or to point the installer at it!
For other installs I've tried (firefox, firestarter firewall and flash player so far), I have absolutely no idea what to do with the downloads either other than also to extract them to separate folders within my own folder area. Clicking on them doesn't seem to work and the only helpful instructions I have managed to source on the web so far say things like "all you have to do is run the make file"....
Run? How? I've tried pasting directory and file names into the "run" command box but it doesn't seem to know what I'm talking about.....
I'm sure it's easy ...... but only when you know how!
So, I have 2 questions really:
1. How do I get the sound to work from my present situation of having no KMix installed apparently?
2. How do I install anything else (I assume I need an antivirus and a firewall as a minimum)?
Treat me gently folks. I don't do DOS and am basic at XP. All help gratefully received.
Many thanks and Merry Christmas to you.
Tony, Cherie and the kids (no, not really)
