how should I partition harddrive

OK, using partition magic, I have partitioned the harddrive as follows

primary partiition is 80gb running xp ntfs
second partition is 68gb unallocated

I want to use the 68gb space for kubuntu without touching the first partition since I have no restore disk for XP

kubuntu 6.06 asks if i would like to install on largest free space, is that the one to choose then

I recommend that you do the partition manually
Create a swap partition of 2-3 GB
a /home partition of 10-15 GB
and use the rest for the root partition /

I would switch that around and change it a bit.

5-6gb /root
1gb /swap
the rest for home or split with /fat to share with windows

thanks, if I choose 'use available free space' and I have split the harddrive into two partitions(one half ntfs running XP, the other half unallocated) will it load on the unalocated partition only and not mess up my XP

if your answer is no, then I imagine that I make the partitions you suggest with partition magic,

Yes, of course, this is a better alternative, keep root small and allocate a lot of space for home.

when I said do it manually, I meant to use the manual partition option in kubuntu, not Partition magic.
Some people have had problems when partitioning with PM, let kubuntu do the work, it will not mess anything up.

alright, not trusting my ability to partition as suggested I just went for the use free space thinking that if I had lost my XP in doing this then the bridge is burnt behind me and the people here will show me that I was right in switching to kubuntu from XP; however, kubuntu as people suggested has done its work and has only set up on the unallocated partition I had planned for it, so I have dual boot, since taping F8 gives me choice of boot, so I am really happy

I suspect that a newbie like me will have to learn what these partitions mean before trying to create them. I will now follow my other thread on how to upgrade from 6.06

conclusion, if you split the hardrive into two on XP with partition magic leaving half unallocated, then install kubuntu choosing the use unused space option, you will get dual boot, as long as you hit F8 on boot

last question; am I safe to suggest to my friends on XP that they can all have dual boot like the way I suggested in my conclusion or was I just lucky
