    Problems after new kernel install

I was trying to install the nvidia drivers for 3D for my graphics card. I installed the restricted module kernel and then attempted to install the nvidia drivers from nvidia's website. The program told me the I was running X server so I logout and went to a console login. This allowed me to install the driver. When I restart I was present with two kernel to choose from in my grub loader. I choose the 386 as opposed to the generic. When it loaded it went directly to the console, and I can't figure out how to get back into the GUI. I tried loading up the other kernel and I got the same problem.
