GUI doesnt work without internet connection

    Hi people

I'm a linux newbie, and I've detected some problems when booting without internet connection.

One of the operations that are done when loading modules is "syncronizing with linuxubuntu.org clock" (or something like that)
If there is no internet connection - maybe because of an ADLS trouble or just because the router is off - the boot stays for a while in that point and suddenly it turns to a console interface, finishes loading modules, and finally letting you log in by console.

If you enter the "startx" command after login, it returns a "fatal error", and continue in the console mode.

How can I make the GUI working at startup without internet connection?

    Thank you

No Internet connection at bootup has nothing to do with you not being able to use the GUI.

The ntp thing can be disabled after you get into your Linux system.
If the install process halts for long at

"Synchronizing clock with ntp.ubuntulinux.org" simply press Ctrl+ C.

Moreover, you forgot to tell what version of Kubuntu you are using.

Also, please give your hardware details.
    What is your Graphics Card?

Re: GUI doesnt work without internet connection

That is what I thought when this matter happened... it's not normal that the GUI doesn't start because of not having internet connection.

      I have Kubuntu 5.10 with AMD64 K8 Kernel.
My hardware is AMD64 3200+ in a Gigabyte K8NF9 motherboard (nForce4 chipset) with 1GB RAM, 200GB S-ATA HDD and Nvidia Geforce 6600 256MB graphic card

As you said, the system boot halts for a (long) while in "syncronizing..." and when it continues loading modules, it prompts from the standard-looking load screen, to a MS-DOS-looking screen (the information shown is the same). When it finishes, it asks you for the login and password, and as you enter them, you are given the command line, in the same console-looking screen. Entering "startx" at this point returns a fatal error, so you cannot acces the GUI.

Edit: when internet connection is available during startup, everything goes OK with the GUI (no graphic card problem or anything), and this issue also happened with the AMD64 generic kernel

      Thank you

            I'm in Madrid (Spain). I think it's GMT+1

Anyway, the S.O. doesn't look at were you are to decide whether to load the GUI or not.

            Thanks!

                Hi,

had this same problem, though [ALT]+[F7] got me the normal kdm.
It just didn"t show the correct console for some reason and it doesn't happen everytime, only sporadically, if the internet is not connected.
