    Microsoft Core fonts installation problem

As a newbie, I tried to follow the instructions of the Kubuntu Desktop Guide,
added the extra repositories with Adapt Package Manager (enabled Multiverse Repository).
While using Apt installer, I can see the Microsoft core fonts, but they remain "gray" (can't select them).
What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance for your reply.

Re: Microsoft Core fonts installation problem

    Hi Jan-Peter

Synaptic Package Manager is much better than Adept

Generally if you have Edgy look at the Unofficial Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy Eft) Starter Guide on http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu_Edgy. If you have Dapper look at the Unofficial Ubuntu 6.06 (Dapper Drake) Starter Guide on http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Dapper

Look partularly at the bit about "How to add extra repositories". Make sure that you have activated the repositories you have by deleting the # in front of the line.

After that the CLI (to be put into Konsole terminal) should be
    sudo apt-get install msttcorefonts

Tried download of Synaptic Package Manager but did not figure out how to add the microsoft fonts (the multiverse is there) either...
In Adept installer the package remains visible, albeit gray....

If you have a quick download speed you could try installing Automatix. This is a script which will automatically download and install a lot of useful programs - including Extra fonts - with mscorefonts.

You can get Automatix from http://www.getautomatix.com. You are instructions on http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu_E...2C_and_Xubuntu

Make sure the lines edited have both 'universe' and 'multiverse'
and be sure to refresh/reload after making any changes to get an updated package list (this may be why the package is grayed out)

In synaptic, just click on the checkbox of the package you want, then select the action you need, in this case 'Mark for Installation' Synaptic will give a little warning that may give a clue as to what is wrong if there is still a problem, using the command line will get us even more error info

Re: Microsoft Core fonts installation problem

            Finally,
I editted the sources.list at the command line as suggested above:
I replaced everything with the relevant lines from http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu_Edgy (see the bit about "How to add extra repositories").
(Needed to change the directory to etc/apt and used Kate as the editor, didn't understand that gedit was an editor - took me some time -, gedit doesn't come standard with Kubuntu, so maybe the user-guide should be made more idiot-proof)

            Anyway,
It works now! I used Synaptic Package Manager to select microsoft core fonts for installation...
But Adept displays the package also in black (=available).

            Thanks, Jan-Peter

note: I also tried over and over the route via the graphical packages but could not figure out the problem
