major problem after partition magic. Please help

    Hi all,
I have kubuntu and windows installed. Since I use almost only kubuntu I decided to resize (shrink) the windows partition. I did it by booting in windows and using partition magic. The problem is that after awhile the program gave me an error (some exception occured) and it asked me to put a floppy disk wher he could write the error. I guess something really serious happened.

After I rebooted the computer I get the following message
    GRUB loading...
    Error 17

I booted the computer with the Kubuntu CD, but I could not open any partition because it says:

    mount: can't find /dev/hda2
    in /etc/fstab
    or /etc/mtab

I am stucked and do not know what to do. Does anyone has any suggestion?
    Thanks very much.
    Marco

Did you have your /home on a separate partition? If so, you could just reinstall and make sure you don't format the partition with /home.

If I reinstall Kbuntu, will I lose my window partition permanently? Not that I really care, but just to konw.
My home was in the same partition of kubuntu, but I have a backup of everything, therefore I will not loose much.
Is there a way to edit or sort out this Grub program?
        Thanks a lot

          Marco,

there may be a way to avoid reinstallation: boot to a "live system" (e.g. Xubuntu) and conduct a file system check on /dev/hda2.

If this fails or you feel uncomfortable with it, please post the output from the console command [sudo] fdisk -l as well as the contents of your installed system's file system table (i.e. [/dev/hda2]/etc/fstab).

My reasoning: I suspect that you have messed up the file systems residing on your harddisk - depending on the degree of (assumed) disorder, this could be sorted out.

The Error 17 means that GRUB has found the partition but that the filesystem is not recognized.

You will not loose your Windows partition.
I had a similar problem yesterday...(I messed with the menu.lst....)
            Gather some information:
Boot your computer with any live linux cd and type this in a terminal window:
            less /etc/fstab
            less /boot/grub/menu.lst
            and compare them...

When you boot your computer do you get to the GRUB menu? If so, highlight the Kubuntu entry and press "e" to edit it and then the tab-key for options.
            - Use the information gathered from your fstab !

You can try and edit as many times as you wish without destroying anything. Once the system has booted you can fix GRUB.

                Marco,

as one can learn from your recent posting, /dev/hda2 is hosting your Windoze system, while Linux' root file system is residing on /dev/hda5. That is interesting, but not helpful in the absence of further information as mentioned before, i.e. the contents of /dev/hda5/boot/grub/menu.lst as well as of /dev/hda5/etc/fstab (the latter one unabridged).

The partition magic (that from now on I will call partition TRAGIC) crashed just after it resized the window partition, and started to move the linux partition.

Why cannot I acces the dev/hda5 ? Did partition Tragic corrupt it?

                  Thanks very much,

                  Marco

the problem is that I cannot go into the /dev/hda5 directory

                    ubuntu@ubuntu:/dev$ cd hda5
bash: cd: hda5: Not a directory
                    ubuntu@ubuntu:/dev$ ls -la
Well /dev/hda5 IS NOT a directory, it is a device
                    Try this when mounting:
First create the directory hda5, then mount the device hda5 in the directory hda5:
                    ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo mkdir /mnt/hda5
                    ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo mount /dev/hda5 /mnt/hda5

then you should be able to see the content, using Konqueror:  media:/

I can recommend the SUPER GRUB DISK,
it is a small .iso or floppy .img which contain automated
repair options as well as other options to repair or start an istalled system that uses GRUB.

                      Have a look at:
                      http://users.bigpond.net.au/hermanzo...bDiskPage.html

Good to have as a backup option.

Thanks everyone for their help. I finally reinstalled everything and said goodbay for ever also to the window partition. That's good afterall. All the partition were corrupted, maybe not irreversibly but it would have taken too long to sort them out.

                        Best,
                        Marco
