    Prepartioned DELL desktop

I am new to Linux and want to install it parallel to WinXP. I bought a brand-new DELL desktop with XP pre-installed. When running Qtparted, I saw that there were already 3 primary partitions set-up (1 NTFS for XP, 1 FAT16 & 1 FAT32 for DELL). I want to configure 2 additional primary partitions and I understand that I am limited to 4 primary partitions. Does anyone have an idea where I can find information to understand what those pre-configured FAT partitions are for?

One of them could be a system recovery partition, so that if you want to return the computer to the default factory condition (or to a prior backup if dell has any backup software installed), all you need to do is press/click a button. does your system have this option?

No idea. At least Dell does not advertize such a capability. Maybe something the manufacturer uses for its own troubleshooting (if machine gets returned to it). I will inquire with the manufacturer and see what responses I get.

After some ping-pong with the Dell support teams and some posting on the Dell Community Fora, I found the answers. They are nicely explained on
        http://www.goodells.net/dellutility
        http://www.goodells.net/dellrestore
and are worthwhile reading for anyone owning a new/recent Dell and wanting to operate Linux next to Win.

Is it a stupid idea to remove those partitions?

Do you really need them? And can you move them to be logical partitions?
