Now, bootup fails: Permission denied

Very recently installed Edgy on my laptop and love(d) it. After setting up and configuring Kubuntu with my preferences, bootup fails with the following display:

/etc/rcS.d/S20checkroot.sh: 407: readlink: Permission denied
/etc/rcS.d/S20checkroot.sh: 407: usplash_write: Permission denied
* Cannot initialize /etc/mtab.
/etc/rcS.d/S20checkroot.sh: 407: rm: Permission denied
init: Unable to execute "/bin/sh" for rc-default: Permission denied
init: rc-default process (3191) terminated with status 1

It is conceivable that I may have entered a rogue change somewhere in Kubuntu while configuring it. Windows, on another partition, still works fine.

Anyone know how to recover from this and correct the situation without having to reinstall and start over? Thanks!

this looks to me as if your file systems were mounted as being "read-only"

In order to check and (change, if applicable) this, you may boot to a live system (read: from CD/DVD), e.g. Xubuntu, and access your installed system's files from there ...
