    DVD playback

I tried to play a DVD with Kaffeine, but it doesn't works. I tried to install libdvdcss, but it went complaining about cpp. I installed gcc, but still wouldn't install. I tried to play a few video files already on my hdd, but Kaffeine seems crashed and with VLC part of the output is strange colours. (somehow also happening with parts of Kopete display pictures) I also tried installing Win32 drivers wich seems to work. Kaffeine --wizard returns no errors, but still gives errors when opening a DVD (NAV) When I go to the DVD with Konqueror it appears empty. I also tried to use Wine, but it isn't installed and doesn't shows up on Adept and is greyed out in Adept Update. Adept does show some Wine related packages, but when selected it gives a (BREAK) install.
Anyone got some tips on this?
Kubuntu Edgy , fresh download and install yesterday
    edit: 64-bit version

    Re: DVD playback

First of all the 64 bit versions of Linux aren't as stable or as easy to configure as the 32 bit ones.

Second - Edgy is a little harder to set up and debug than Dapper. Apparently if it works on your machine it just works. Otherwise there will be a fair amount of fidgeting around. I have Dapper, so I may not be able to help much.

Have you installed your video drivers yet? If not - do you have a Nvidia card? If you do haven a Nvidia card then this is your one stop shopping place:
    http://getautomatix.com/

This will install all you codecs and libs for movies. It also has a installer for Nvidia cards.

Warning - if you have already installed your driver do *not* reinstall with this.

Please note that there are 2 different sets of instructions - one for Dapper and one for Edgy. Also the install is different for Kubuntu opposed to Ubuntu.

An excellent starter page is here:
    http://psychocats.net/ubuntu/index

The page on "Enabling Extra Repositories" will solve your wine install problems.

Wine is beta software also - so some head scratching will be required. :-)
