Alternative To Microsoft Exchange Server

Hi,

Ive been playing around in Kubuntu for a few months now and have decided to use it for a project i'm doing at university in my networking class. I have to setup a file sharing network + intranet and also an email server using Linux as a server and NT machines as the clients.

Samba takes care of the file sharing etc however i need to find an alternative to microsoft exchange server for the email side of things. Does anyone have any ideas of what i can use?

Any help would be great at this stage
