Help with adept

Complete linux newbie, just installed Kubuntu and trying to get to grips with some of the basics. Adept, I'm currently trying to use and I want to find more software ie synaptic mainly but all it gives is a list of installed software. So I uncheck installed and there isn't any others. So, I go to manager repertoires, enable some of the other options and say to fetch updates. At this point, it just stays on 0% and all I still have is the list of what I already have. So what can I do, thanks?

Try opening a terminal (KMenu>System>Konsole) and put in it

sudo apt-get install synaptic

Hmm says apt not found.

Ok tried under root this time, and got:

"Package synaptic is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source"

would you please post a copy of the the file /etc/apt/sources.list to this forum? At first sight, it looks to me as if this list of yours could do with some addition(s) ...

Well guessing, I went into root terminal and typed /etc/apt/sources.list and it said permission denied.

alright read a bit of the manual of apt and typed in:
apt-get update and it said this:

E: Could not get lock /var/lib/apt/lists/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the list directory

apt-get update

It has to be sudo apt-get for you are not supposed to blow your system as ordinary user

If all else fails, you may try

sudo dpkg --configure -a

When it tries to get update with apt it still stays on 0%, do you think a router could be having any effect as it is saying connecting to 1.0.0.0 or something.

To check this, you could try to "manually contact" one of the servers hosting the repositories as follows:

USER@C3PO # ping gb.archive.ubuntu.com
PING gb.archive.ubuntu.com (195.248.90.35) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 195.248.90.35: icmp_seq=1 ttl=52 time=44.2 ms

If you get an answer similar to the one displayed above, hit [ctrl][c] to stop; if, as I suspect, the answer reads host unknown or the like, your problems originate from your (own) network settings, nor from the repository servers neither from package management ...
