installing on dell

I have a dell insprion 8100? my wifes uses it and needs it for her job when at home - It runs win2000. how can I install kubuntu or ubuntu even on it without overwriting her files and also the win 2000? Is there anyway that can be done without redoing the whole system?

also - is there a way to do the same on a mac powerbook? os X 10.4.7?

then look at the dual booting guides referenced on that guide. But as this computer has important files PLEASE back them up first - you are messing around with the hard disk

Yes you can do all these things - I would recommend you get a kubuntu live cd for the dell if you don't want to actually install the OS onto your hard drive - go here for that:http://www.kubuntu.org/download.php - you will also see a powermac version there.

thanks - i have the CD -s but hate running in on CD -= too slow and cumbersome. I want it on the HD.

I looked all over and i do not see a credible way to partition this easy.

Not sure I completely understand - i gave you links to dual booting schemes and there is not much to add. Basically shrink your windows partition, add a 1gb swap partition and add an ext3 partition in the rest of the space for kubuntu. If you need a tool to do the job then gparted is superb. Get it here:
