    Dapper-Edgy upgrade = disaster

I've got this going over here
    http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=11019.0

but thought I'd drop it here as well

having run through this now for a couple of days, everything now seems to point to the size mismatch reported in
    sudo apt-get -f install
    <see a couple posts ago>
11 'get's' then happen, then eleven failures OF THE SAME FILES
    Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/poo...kdemultimedia/
    kdemultimedia-dev_3.5.5-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
    libkcddb1_3.5.5-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
    kaudicreator_3.5.5-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
    kdemultimedia-kio-plugins_3.5.5-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
    kmid_3.5.5-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
    kmix_3.5.5-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
    krec_3.5.5-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
    kscd_3.5.5-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
    libarts1-akode_3.5.5-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
    libarts1-mepglib_3.5.5-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
    artsbuilder_3.5.5-0ubuntu1_i386.deb

and all faillures are due to Size mismatch
So somewhere those files have what- incorrect MD5Sum's ??
seems like this is a server issue??

I just read all your post - and you've had a hard row to hoe here!

I tried installing Edgy and it looked like it was going to be a little more involved that I could handle than with 5 months of Linux under my belt. So I reverted back to Dapper.

With Dapper it's been around for a while, people have found solutions to the bugs and quirks, there are many more ex-perinced users to draw on for help.

I did a fair amount of reading before I installed - and upgrading over the internet either works perfectly or it's an utter disaster.

What kind of computer do you have?

Where did you get your sources.list file from? There's something very wrong here someway.

Have you thought about doing a clean install of either Dapper or Edgy from a CD?

If you're brand new to Linux I'd suggest you give the 32 bit Dapper a go, I think you'd have better luck.

      I built it- 2g P4

it's the one that came with Dapper, as I've never even looked at it before this all started
I'm looking at this and comparing right now

        I edited sources.list to match
        http://www.debianadmin.com/ubuntu-ed...list-file.html
but it hasn't made any difference- still the same files report Size Mismatch

          Re: Dapper-Edgy upgrade = disaster

          sudo apt-get clean
did that- made lots of grinding noises- noise is good . . .

          sudo apt-get update
I get 3 GPG errors- two from kubuntu.org, one from freecontrib.org

          sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
          I get two unmet dependencies
kdemultimedia-dev: Depends: mpeglib (=4:3.5.5-0ubuntu1~dapper1) but 4:3.5.5-0ubuntu1 is installed
Depends: noatun (=4:3.5.5-0ubuntu1~dapper1) but 4:3.5.5-0ubuntu1 is installed

and, of course, kdemultimedia-dev is one of the size-mismatch errors reported by
          sudo apt-get -f install

          Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/poo...kdemultimedia/
          kdemultimedia-dev_3.5.5-0ubuntu1_i386.deb

          and it's exactly the same
kdemultimedia-dev / mpeglib / noatun combo that craps out
          sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg

more importantly, traffic (lots more than mine) in these fora indicates serious problems with the Dapper-Edgy upgrade. "Just nuke it and start over- the vanilla install works much better" doesn't address the upgrade, which needs to be fixed- not just for this one, but also to better inform future upgrades. In general, I know **** about Linux and Kubuntu, but I'm a friggin' awesome newbie <G> My job isn't to fix the problem, or even to identify the problem- but I can report symptoms in the hope that someone somewhere will be able to use those symmptoms to identify and repair the problem(s)

              I've been posting this stuff to <Help the New Guy>, <Software Support> and <Installation and Boot>

Is there anywhere else anyone can suggest I look?
