Just some general questions (including video, sound, and installation)

    Let's start with the sound.

For one, how would I install my sound card? My sounds are not working and I've been trying to fix this for quite some time.

Secondly, my resolution and everything is okay, but the color is bad; whenever I see black, there'll be other colors in there as well, making it 'choppy'. I think this is due to my drivers, but I do not know how to install them.

Lastly, there are some things that I cannot seem to install, such as WINE and VLC. When I use the apt-get command, it'll say that I'm missing something but I can't recall what. I can, and did, however, install other things, including Firefox, so I'm not completely helpless here.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Not sure if this will help with your sound or not, but when I added a sound card, I had to disable the onboard sound in the bios. Worked lovely, then.

      Cheers

I've actually been using the first link, but it keeps saying something about not having the package or repositories. I followed the directions exactly, but I still don't know what's wrong.

Also, I just tried installing something, and it says that I'm missing a package. How would I go fixing that?

To "enable extra repositories" go here:
            http://psychocats.net/ubuntu/sources

that will resolve most of the missing packages errors.

It's going to be really hard for anyone to help when they don't know what you need help with. :-) For instance - what kind of sound and video card do you have? What modle is it? For instance - old ATI cards need a different driver than new ones do, and sound blaster is not the same as sound blaster platimum.

When you have an error message - copy it and post it here would be very helpful.

              Thanks for post.

As for my problem, there isn't really any 'error' messages. For example, my video card is just fine, but when I use a darker wallpaper (or viewing anything dark), the colors are not 'blended', meaning I can see several different colors instead of black.

Same type of thing is happening with my sound card; it's not giving me any errors, but I just can get it to work.

              Video card: nVidia GeForce 6200
Sound card: Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Gamer

Have you installed you video drivers yet? I used this site for my 6100 and it went fine. Note this is a Dapper guide. If you have Edgy go to the top of the page there is a link to the Edgy page:
                http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu_E...r_.28NVIDIA.29

The sound blaster may end up being a tough one. I searched their knowledge base and found a link to this:
                http://opensource.creative.com/soundcard.html

                and this:
                http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc...-Creative_Labs

They have an official forum, and one of the moderators replied:
                Linux? What's Linux?"

                  podunk:

I tried both guides and neither of them helped me. The nvidia drivers were never enabled and as for the sound card, it didn't work.

Did you get "multiverse" and "universe" repositories working?

Re: Just some general questions (including video, sound, and installation)

You can check your drivers by entering this:
                      Code:
                      glxinfo
                      The output should say
                      direct rendering Yes
server glx vendor string Nvidia Corp

followed by a bunch of gibberish

About the sound card - I can't help much there. I gave up on soundblaster with 5.1 in Windows. Every installer I ever used from them was buggy. I'm sure trying to set it up in Linux is going to be a wonderful learning experience. :-(
