Completely independant. Ubuntu has its very own repositories, and to my liking they are updated much more rapidly and usually work 99% of the time. There's lots of info on this. Search google, or htis forum, or ubuntu forums, the ubuntu site etc. It's everywhere. Debian packages often break ubuntu systems because they aren't that much a like ( last time I remember anyways )
