Setting up Lexmark z600 in Windows home network

Hi, I am brand new to Linux and have installed Kubuntu 6.10 on my WinXP PC. All my hardware has been identified and is setup for use as far as I can tell with the exception of the Lexmark z600 printer connected to my wife's pc. We have a home network in place and two other pc's use the printer connected to my wife's computer successfully (WinXP is the os on them all). My Kubuntu installation can see the files on my XP partition and I can see the files on my wife's pc, and we can share files using an FAT32 partition on my HD, and of course I can get on the internet (I am using Firefox 2 on Kubuntu at this moment), and check email with Thunderbird. What I am having a huge problem doing is getting Kubuntu to communicate with the printer. I tried to setup the driver based on some instructions I found on a website that I now cannot recall, and the driver did not install error free. The best I have been able to do is when I click the test button on the screen, the printer has responded only for a moment as though it wanted to start and then just immediately quits. The Lexmark is connected to my wife's pc with a USB cable. I have tried to enable file sharing on Kubuntu and the screen for setting it up is grayed out even when I go through the administrator button. I am totally baffled. I am very unfamiliar with this operating system and how to enter commands in the console and barely know how to get around to the different modules that make up the system. The instructions I found that did not work correctly (at least as I implemented them, and I know I may have messed it up due to ignorance), were apparently written assuming the user was familiar with the various commands and exactly where to execute them, etc. Please help somebody. Kubuntu is not worth much to me if I cannot get docs to the printer. I am so fed up with MS OS that I really want an alternative besides Mac OSX, and I have heard so many good things about Linux. Thanks for any help you folks can give me.

I was in your very place, Z600 Lexmark POS and a Linux PC... I got a driver from Lexmarks web site.
I got it going, then I bought a Network Brother Laser Printer and got rid of the Lexmark $$$ maker Z600!
