    problems with adept

    hey guys

Ok, I wanted to install the seti at home client. I got the adept to download it, it got whatever file it wanted(it has its own get command) and works fine, until it tries to connect to berkely, or maybe it didn't get its package and thats the problem, I don't know,

Anyway, not adept will not work, saying the database is locked. I try the configure -a command, it brings it back up, but when it gets to the seti part, it dies out. Well, times out.

How can I get the seti package out of there?

No problems with kubuntu so far, with OPERA neither my wife nor I can tell a difference, but seti, yuck!

Last time I go looking for alien life, :O

    Narceron,

are you aware of the fact that the SETI data are handled by the BOINC manager? SETI is no longer a project of it's own but part of the BOINC group. Therefore, the packages of most relevance are boinc-manager, boinc-client and boinc-app-seti - at least, that's what I'm making use of on Kubuntu 06.10 ...

      Re: problems with adept

      Yeah, but here's the thing,

Seti is scheduled to be downloaded and while its in there I can not access adept and I don't know how to reset adept or cancel seti.

So unless I"m missing something, bionic would not fix the problem.

when I hit --configure -a it goes through the process, but then times out when trying to contact berkeley.

        Narceron,

there's no need to send your Adept to Berkeley ... the relevant software packages are to be found in the default "(K)Ubuntu Universe" repositories - and for SETI data files, you won't need Adept at all ...

I'm not sure if we are singing the same tune on this

We aren't singing the same at all, :0

I got the seti files from the repository, They downloaded fine, but during installation, when you view details it says, contacting berkeley, then gives an IP address, then says resolving, then says connecting

And it times out three times, every time, and then the adept is locked.

Well, I know that to unlock Adept, you delete some log file somewhere.

It sounds like berkeley does not exist, or cannot be reached. Did you have to specify anywhere what the IP address it is to contact?

No it is supposedly self working or whatever,

              Here is my konsole read:

              Narceron@segnar:~$ sudo dpkg --configure -a
              Password:
              Setting up setiathome (3.08-4) ...
              setiathome-3.08.i686-pc-linux-gnu.tar not found in /tmp.
              --00:26:28-- ftp://alien.ssl.berkeley.edu/pub/set...-linux-gnu.tar
              => `/tmp/file1DNQ9l'
              Resolving alien.ssl.berkeley.edu... 128.32.18.176
              Connecting to alien.ssl.berkeley.edu|128.32.18.176|:21...

Then it times out and just dies, But I exit out of it, if it goes back to the command line and kubuntu is fine, just the adept is not working, another process is using the database,

No, another program is NOT using the database. Adept closed out unexpectedly, and that means that the file that it uses to tell all other programs that it's using the package manager was never erased. All other programs (itself included) beleive that it's using the packaging system, but nothing really is. I have had this problem far too often, and one time I re-installed Kubuntu from ignorance. I remember that there was a file to delete, but I'm tired and I don't remember what it is.

I don't think so (to be honest - no offence) ... the SETI client you're trying to use is not valid anymore - you have to install BOINC in order to get SETI to work, as is stated on SETI@home's own web site. (I'm not even sure the the server you're attempting to connect still exists ...)

Try using this command in the konsole:
                    Code:
                    sudo dpkg --configure -a
It should finish what adept was doing and release the lock file

Yeah, that's what I meant. The error you got usually means that the server it tried to contact no longer exists.

Umm, actually, the text I posted was from when I used the sudo dpkg --configure -a command, so that does not work. At least it has not so far.

To be honest, seti is not that important, I just want to get the rest of adept working, at this point. Is there a way to get rid of that install file, because when I do the --configure - a it just tries to connect to seti again,

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills, here, lol. Birdy is telling me to use another program, which I'm sure is correct, but really, I just want to get the adept working again, lol. Seti is not a priority, lol, I was just trying it out when they sent me an email to sign up,

And you guys telling me to use the --configure -a command, when I obviously had used it(from the pasted text) is just crazy talk,

LOL, but then again, I do appreciate the help, and I"m sure someone will be able to understand whats up,

Yes, but it simply can't finish what it was doing. So, you need to delete those files.

                            Re: problems with adept

Every time Adept has locked on me it's because there is an error in my sources.list file. You could try this, you'd only be out 5 minutes. Do you have back up of the file /etc/apt/sources.list ? If so, try to restore it. If not the sources I used to fix my apt follow.

First back up the file you have:
                            Code:
                            sudo cp /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list_backup
                            then
                            Code:
                            kdesu kate /etc/apt/sources.list
Delete what's there and add this:
                            Code:
                            ## Add comments (##) in front of any line to remove it from being checked.

Sorry for that, I didn't read the thread thoroughly (enough), I thought Tynach had a problem with a lock file, and offered a solution for that (unneededly :P). dpkg --configure won't help in your case (as you have clearly noticed). Since there are errors during the install, it probably won't go through no matter how many times you run it
