    CUPS - sorting a problem

I have tried various messages to get help setting up printing - to no avail.
    I have now found localhost:631.
It shows the printer as all set up, idle, waiting for jobs etc.
When I try a test page however, I get this message:
    "/usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed"
What does it mean - what do I do, please?
I tried pressing other buttons (Cancel all jobs - for instance) but it requires the username and password, or root username and password - yet it rejects whatever I type in.

    I cannot get into CUPS.
It rejects the root name (root) and the password I just set in Konsole.
It rejects my log in name and password.
getting fed up with CUPS as it wont print anything, nor can I administer it!

am I supposed to set up the admin of CUPS seperately or something?
Help! No printing for three weeks

      Hello.

I don't know if this will solve your problem, but it helped me out:

      sudo foomatic-cleanupdrivers
      sudo adduser cupsys shadow
      sudo dpkg-reconfigure cupsys

I then went to http://localhost:631/ and it accepted my username and password.

No - yet again! Spent many a happy hour redoing everything for the nth time - and the commands you gave me didn't result in any printing!
        Thanks though!
        Hopefully someone there can help?

The jobs just come up as 'stopped' and a string 'usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed'

Please someone - this is months without any printing!! Why on earth should it be so difficult to print?
