I absolutely can not get my video drivers working for ATI 200m...

    Oh... man...

I want to pull all of my hair out. I have tried all sorts of different guides to getting this video card to work with no luck whatsoever. I tried a couple months ago when the official drivers didn't even work for the 200m at all (for anyone).... I've tried the 8.29.6 drivers... I tried the 8.30.3 drivers... IT WILL NOT WORK!!

The guide which seems the best and got me closest to victory was this one here:
    http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubu...allation_Guide (method 2)

But when I reboot the computer after it's all finished, I am greeted by a black screen and the os doesn't even load.

I am so angry with Kubuntu right now... well, more like I am angry with ATI because I think that's where the real problem lies here. I just don't know what to do at this point. I really want to use linux on my laptop but this is unbelievable to me how ridiculously complicated and convoluted it is just to get these drivers working. I can't even begin to understand why it's necessary for an installation to use an endless string of complicated commands like this.... and even worse I don't understand how anyone is supposed to figure this stuff out?! My god. Every installation guide for these drivers I find seems to be completely different. Where are people getting this stuff from? Makes no sense whatsoever to me.

Anyway, looks like I'm starting to rant... so does anyone have any advice for me or am I just screwed at this point?

Probably os loads but graphical interface don't work

    Press Ctrl+ Alt+F1 (or F2..F6).
    Log in the text mode.

    note
    F7 is the kdm.
F8 is the start screen in text mode.

In the Ctrl+ Alt+F8 screen. What is the last executed command ?

    Hmm - what says:

    Code:
    dmesg | grep fglrx
    or

    Code:
    nano /var/log/Xorg.0.log
    /1/

    Any errors ?

    Is card recognized ?:

    Code:
    sudo lspci -v

Yes it is ridiculous. Reminds when i had msdos and 386 (memory and graphic settings). And that was in the past millenium

I can't even begin to understand why it's necessary for an installation to use an endless string of complicated commands like this....
    There are helppers:

Kommander script/gui for fglrx video driver:
    fglrxKonf

kX Generator is a utilitty to configure the X server:

Every installation guide for these drivers I find seems to be completely different. Where are people getting this stuff from?
    By trial and error

    A long time ago:

Install instructions for Ubuntu 5.04 (Hoary Hedgehog)

    Install the xorg-driver-fglrx package:

Add fglrx to /etc/modules (optional, the advantages/drawbacks of this are: ......)

    Reconfigure Xserver:

    Pray

    Restart your computer
    (cry or smile)
To me it was smile. And i'm still smiling (Kubuntu 6.06 ). 6.10 - not yet. Maybe some day

Usefull (?) links to edgy problems with ati cards:

    fglrx ATI driver for edgy

How do I enable "fglrx" for my ati graphics card?

/1/ nano is small text editor. works in the text mode.
    Before you edit, BACKUP !

Why there are dead links ?

Try the following HowTo over on the Ubuntu Forums:

      http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthre...light=ati+200m

It helped me get my 200M working with the proprietary ATI drivers. Still haven't gotten Beryl or Compix working yet.

      Hope this helps.
