    Dapper or Edgy?

I am an ex-Windows geek, now Kubuntu Noob 3 weeks in, and have been using it, playing with it, making mistakes with it, re-installing it, updating it, you name it, and learning a ton! Today I read an article here:

    http://news.zdnet.com/2100-3513_22-6...ml?tag=nl.e589

...it's all about Edgy and what Cononical(?) is planning with it, features it includes etc; question, as just one of the many who is trying Kubuntu with the hopes of leaving Windows forever....should I have started with Kubuntu Dapper (my current install 6.0.6.1) or with Edgy? What is the difference between the two? Does Edgy use the Gnome desktop rather than the KDE I have come to know and love? What Gives?

I seek any and all opinions in the spirit of Ubuntu. Thanks people!

    Re: Dapper or Edgy?

Kubuntu is the Ubuntu variant that uses KDE as the default desktop. Ubuntu uses Gnome. You can install gnome in kubuntu and vice versa if you want and choose which desktop environment to work in.

Dapper Drake is a stable version of (K)ubuntu that has long term support. It is a fine distro and you have no need to upgrade to Edgy which is the new (today) version - unless you want to. Edgy is the cutting edge version - and Linux is all about choice.

If you have a working Dapper and a broadband connection you can upgrade to Edgy right now by following the instructions here

    http://kubuntu.org/announcements/6.10-release.php

Under the "Upgrading from 6.06 LTS" Section

Enjoy Linux - there is a lot here!

      Re: Dapper or Edgy?

Thanks for the quick response and info!

Yes, looks like I may go ahead and download/upgrade to Edgy.....why not? LOL I'm a noob but adventurous, sick sick sick of Windows, loving the whole Kubuntu thing and the constant evolution that is so apparent in it. So....I'm broadband.....I'll grab it and check it out, nothing to lose and.....lots to learn!

They mention that Edgy will be supported for only 18 months but gee.....18 months in Kubuntu terms is a long long time. I will enjoy using, testing and screwing up the latest version while surfing further on the Kubuntu Linux learning curve. Wish me luck with my upgrade!

        Re: Dapper or Edgy?

Great post nightcrawler. I was just starting to wonder and ask those same questions. I'm a newbie myself with about 4 weeks.

Instead of me starting another post I'll just add my questions to this one.
What is Dapper/Edgy? Is it a kernel? I know the difference between Gnome or KDE but am a little confused as to what Dapper/Edgy is, other than Edgy is new and better. Does it do more than just start up faster which seems to be the highlight of Edgy. If I install Edgy will I have to reconfigure all my hardware to work with Edgy or will it transfer all my new settings? I am DL Edgy now hoping it will be a smooth upgrade. Looking forward to your responses.

If it's anything like the 6.06 install the most I will have to do is remount a drive or two. I went to the link

          http://kubuntu.org/announcements/6.10-release.php

Lots of great info there; I just downloaded the 6.10 iso and will be upgrading in a few minutes. Once done, I can tell you how painful it was! LOL Let's hear it for the Noobs!

            Re: Dapper or Edgy?

Just a comment on the What is dapper / what is edgy post. Its not about the kernel - kernels are updated routinely using the updater feature as are many other programs. Neither is it what you will be used to in Windows where many years go by followed by a hugely different release (e.g. 3.11 to 95, xp to Vista). Instead, the pace of open source development means that new releases are much more evolutionary. To find out what is different in Edgy over Dapper look here.

              Re: Dapper or Edgy?

Again, nice info and...it is appreciated! To all, I updated to Edgy 6.10 last night and it's very smooth, subtle, sophisticated, and the apps, artistic look, feel and layout are all very well done. I salute the development community team, all of em, this baby is really sweet!

The simple "apt-cdrom" method did not work for me and so I did it the hard way, took me 20-30 minutes or so. During this process I had problems booting the 6.10 Live CD. I found out (30 mins later!) that I had burned the .iso to the cd in iso form, not extracted form! Doh!!! Boy...did I feel stupid.

I have it up and running now and once again...I think I'm in love. So. having taken that (faith required) step over to Edgy, I'm back to installing Cedega and working on getting a couple more of my games to work. Microsoft Windows, your days are numbered.

Did you upgrade or just reformat and partition your HD and install it from scratch?

I did an apt-get and you can read the rest here:

                  Re: Dapper or Edgy?

Reformatted and installed it ergo "...the hard way". I had problems with the apt instructions, and from what I have read, looks like I was not the only one. I keep good backups, and so although it took me another 10 minutes to get my box back up, it was all good and I am happy so far with Edgy.

How is your install looking? Did you ever get it in ok?

No I never got it back up. So instead of using more time I didn't have, I ended up wiping the whole drive with a fresh install of Edgy. It is up and running good now.
Isn't FF 2.0 supposed to be default? Cause it isn't installed on my Edgy.

Go to K Menu ->System-> Adept Package manager.
                      Open it. Search for Firefox.

And install it. Easy. You will have FF 2.0

It's the default browser for ubuntu, kubuntu uses konqueror as default. Of course you can install the browser of your choice (like firefox or opera) if you prefer.
