I think I have the same problem, I would be interested in any answers you received.
I have installed kubuntu 6.06 yesterday on my laptop. The install went smooth but when I launched kamarok or kaffeine, and try to play a song, it would last one second without sound.

The most likely answer is that you both need to install support for mp3s, which is not installed out-of-the-box as mp3 is a restricted format.

Basically you need to enable 'multiverse' software repository and install a package called 'libxine-extracodecs'

      More information here:
      https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats
Make sure you read the 'Before you start' and follow the instructions for kubuntu (as opposed to ubuntu).

For gcc and the basic compiling tools, install package 'build-essential'

          Hello
I think (as kubicle told you) you shoul install libmad0 and libextracodecs from amarok dot kde dot org. Or ask uncle google ^_^
After that u can hear a song that has mp3 format, or if u dont want to hear mp3 song, convert it with converter application to .ogg file.
